Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann (* January 25, 1815 in Cottbus; \u2020 December 6, 1901 in Leipzig) was a pioneer of photography and left behind a significant legacy in this field.\nBorn the daughter of a master tailor, she lived in Dresden between 1839 and 1843, where she learned the then new technique of the daguerreotype.\nThe daguerreotype was the first practicable method of photography, named after the French inventor Louis Daguerre, and produced detailed images on silver-plated copper plates. <\/p>\n\n

At the end of 1845, she married the Leipzig daguerreotypist Eduard Wehnert, with whom she had already opened a joint photographic studio in Leipzig.\nAfter the early death of her husband in 1847, she continued to run the business successfully.\nDuring a stay in the USA in 1850\/51, she played a pioneering role in paper photography, as documented in the book “A German Lady”.\nHer work from this period is considered sensational.\nAfter her return to Leipzig, she continued to develop her business and opened the first stereoscope exhibition in the German-speaking world in 1854. <\/p>\n\n

In 1865, she decided to invest her considerable fortune in the construction of a magnificent residential palace.\nThe Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann Villa became a symbol of her success and her vision.\nDespite the destruction that Leipzig suffered in the two world wars, the villa survived the attacks largely unscathed.\nThis is possibly due to its location outside the most central part of the city.\nIt was not until 1882 that Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann retired, leaving behind an impressive legacy.\nToday, the villa stands as a testament to the combination of history, art and architecture. <\/p>\n\n
